Proximal Radioulnar Joint Flashcards
What type of joint is the proximal radioulnar joint?
Synovial pivot joint
How is this joint connected?
By interosseous membrane
What are the movements of this joint?
Pronation and supination
What is pronation?
Rotation of the radius around the ulna
What is supination?
Rotation of the radius back to anatomical position
What are the articular surfaces of this joint?
Head of radius with the radial notch of the ulna and annular ligament
How does pronation and supination occur?
Due to the head of the radius rotating in relation to the ulna within the fibre-osseius ring created by the annular ligament and radial notch of the ulna
What are the ligaments associated with this joint?
Annular ligament and Quadrate ligament
What does the annular ligament prevent?
Posterolateral dislocation of the radius
What ligaments blends with the radial collateral and ulnar collateral ligament?
Annular ligament
What ligament is reinforced by the annular ligament?
Quadrate ligament
What limits pronation and supination?
Quadrate ligament
What allows pronation and supination?
Annular ligament
What muscles are involved in pronation?
Pronator teres and pronator quadratus
What muscles are involved in supination?
Biceps Brachii at 90 degrees flexion and supinator
