movement in and out of cells Flashcards
diffussion
the random movement of particles from an area of high concentration to low concentration
net movement
from the high concentration out
(general direction of movement of particles)
concentration gradient
particles move down the slope toward the low concentration because of gravity
diffusion in living organisms
living organisms get many of the substances they need by diffusion aswell as get rid of waste products
diffusion in plants
plants need CO2 for photosynthesis
CO2 diffuses from the air through the stomata
oxygen diffuses out the leave the same way
osmosis
the diffussion of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane
water in the body
blood is 90% water
water is in the digestive system
water carried out water (excretory system)
osmosis net movement
high water potential to low water potential
osmosis in animal cells
may cause the cell to shrink from loss of water or burst from too much water
osmosis and plant cells
if a cell is surrounded by pure water, then the water will pass into the vacuole through osmosis, causing the vacuole to push against the cell wall and membrane
plat cells wont burst because of the cell wall
if the plant cell loses water it wilts
when the plant cell fills its rigid
tugor pressure
the force within a cell that passes the cell membrane against the cell wall
turgid
turgor pressure within a plant cell makes it a turgid
plasmolysis\||
contraction of a plant cell when it loses water from being in a hypertonic solution
flaccid
when cells are soft and contracted due to plasmolysis
where does the cell get its energy from
mitochrondria porduce energy in cells
some of this energy is used to cause the carries, proteins to change shape and therefore carry out active transport
