Motor Units Flashcards
What is a motor unit
Consists of a motor neurone and a bunch of muscle fibres
What is the all or none law
Contracts fully or not at all
Increase or decreased rate of stimulation
What is a motor unit
A motor neurone plus all the muscle fibres it innervates
What is the function of a motor neurone
It’s function is to carry impulses from the central nervous system to the muscle fibres to initiate muscular contraction.
What is the definition of action potential
This is the electrical impulse travelling down the motor unit
If this impulse is strong enough and reaches the threshold, the impulse will travel into the muscle and causes all fibres connected to the motor unit to contract
What happens to the signal after it is received by the motor unit
Signal moves down the axon towards the muscle fibres
What is the neuromuscular junction
The point at which the motor neurone communicates with the muscle fibres
