Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Definition of heart rate
Number of times the heart beats per minute
Unit = bpm
Definition of stroke volume
Amount of blood ejected from the left ventricle per beat
Units = ml
Cardiac output definition
Amount of blood ejected from the left ventricle per minute
Units = l/min
the relationship between the three
cardiac output = stroke volume x heart rate
average heart rate at rest
70bpm
average value for stroke volume at rest
70ml
average value of cardiac output rest
5l/min
heart rate value for endurance athletes
50bpm
stroke volume value for endurance athletes
100ml
cardiac output value for endurance athletes
5l/min
definition of Bradycardia
heart rate below 60bpm
what does the plasma do in the body?
- yellowish liquid component of blood that holds the blood cells and whole blood in suspension
- 55% of the total blood volume
- prevents blood clots as it targets nutrients which affects performance levels
- hydration is important for the plasma
what do the platelets do in the body?
- component of the blood that acts to external bleeding by clumping and clotting
- prevent infection as prevent exposure
- mean athletes are less likely to get an infection and be taken out of training and performance won’t drop
what do the red blood cells do in the body?
- made in the bone marrow and contain haemoglobin which contains oxygen
- also carries co2
- 4 oxygens per haemoglobin
what do the white blood cells do in the body?
- cells of the immune system and fight disease
- also made in bone marrow
- prevent time of from sport and training
