Motor Unit Flashcards
What is a motor unit?
A motor neuron plus all the muscle fibres it innervates
What is the motor units function?
To carry impulses from the central nervous system to the muscle fibres to initiate muscular contraction
What happens when there is a greater number of motor units recruited?
There is a greater force of contraction in the muscle
What are the 3 types of motor units in muscles and their characteristics?
Type 1- small, low force of contraction over a long period of time
Type 2a- force and time of contraction in between type 1 and 2b
Type 2b- large, produce greatest force over shortest period of time
What order are the motor units recruited?
1st motor units recruited are type 1- low force
2nd motor units recruited are type 2a- increased force
3rd motor units recruited are type 2b- increases further
What is the order of the nervous stimulation of the motor unit (anatomy)?
Neuron, axon, neuromuscular junction, synapse, motor end plate
What is a neuron?
A nerve cell
What is the function of an axon?
It carries the electrical impulse from cell body to neuromuscular junction
What is the neuromuscular junction?
The point where motor neuron communicates with muscle fibre across the synapse
What is the synapse?
The space between a motor neuron and skeletal muscle
What is the motor end plate?
The area of muscle fibre that establishes synaptic contact with motor neuron
What is the order of the nervous stimulation of the motor unit (physiology)?
Resting potential, action potential, neurotransmitter, acetyl choline, all or none law
What is resting potential?
The neuron is at rest, the charge inside the neuron is lower than outside
What is action potential?
The electrical activity carried down the axon
What is the neurotransmitter?
The chemical messenger that transmits across synapse and binds to muscle fibres to initiate contraction
