Motor Neurone Disease Flashcards
How do you diagnose MND?
its a clinical diagnosis
is it treatable?
no
what sort of motor signs do you get in MND?
upper and lower
what is the most common subtype
ALS
peak age ?
50-75
how does it present ?
muscle weakness and wasting secondary to motor neuron degeneration. It causes muscle weakness & wasting, speech, swallowing & breathing problems
sensory?
no loss of sensation, still feel everything
common area for muscle wasting ?
Preferential wasting in the thenar group is a typical pattern of atrophy seen in ALS
The three most common types of dementia
1 alzheimers
2 lewey body
3 frontotemporal dementia
Babinskis sign, upper or lower?
upper motor sign
wasting of what other muscle group is common?
tibialis anterior
does it affect your eyes?
no
why would you do nerve conduction studies?
will show normal motor conduction, so helps exclude a neuropathy
why would an MRI be done?
to exclude the differential diagnosis of cervical cord compression and myelopathy
does MND affect your eyes?
no
