motivation & emotion Flashcards
satisfaction of needs
motivates a person to engage in behaviors that will help satisfy the need
drive reduction
motivates behaviors that will satisfy a certain need, when the need is satisfied, the drive is reduced
optimal level of arousal
motivates to engage in behaviors that fit with people’s preferred level of arousal
pleasure principle
motivates to engage in behaviors that make people feel good and to avoid behavior that cause pain
incentives
incentives, external objects of goals, that motivate behavior
maslow hierarchy of needs
bottom to top
physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, self-actualization
homeostasis
tendency for bodily functions that remain in equilibrium
setpoint
indicates homeostasis for the system
intrinsic motivation
desire to perform an activity because of the value and pleasure associated with that activity rather than to achieve an external goal
extrinsic motivation
desire to perform an activity to achieve an external goal, such as receiving a reward
what can extrinsic motivation do to motivation?
reduce it
what is the self-determination theory?
people are motivated by a desire to feel good about themselves which inspires them to do their most creative work
why is the self-perception theory?
people are seldom aware of their specific motives so instead they make inferences about their motives according to what seems to make the most sense
why is extrinsic motivation bad for self-determination & self-perception theory?
SD - reduces the feeling that you are choosing to do something for yourself
SP - being reward for engaging in a behavior causes a person to get an alternative explanation for it and without the reward, they have no reason to engage in the behavior
glucose
proves the main source of energy needed to keep our bodies alive
