health Flashcards
stress
set of behavioral, mental, and physical processes that occur when attempting to deal with an environmental event or stimulus that it perceives as threatening
stressor
environmental event or a stimulus that an organism perceives as threatening
stress response
behavioral, mental and/or physical response to stressors
eustress
stress of positive events
distress
stress of negative things
major life stressors
large disruptions, especially unpredictable and uncontrollable catastrophic events
daily hassles
small day-to-day irritations and annoyances
general adaption syndrome
consistent patterns of physical responses to stress that consists of three stages; alarm, resistance, and exhaustion
what does the alarm stage do to the body?
- emergency response (heart beat increases & sweaty palms)
- energies directed to dealing with the stressor so other physical resources such as ability to fight off infections & diseases are temporarily reduced
what does the resistant stage do to the body
- body physically prepared for longer, more sustained attack against stressor
immunity to infection and diseases increases somewhat as the body maximizes its defense
what does the exhaustion stage do to the body?
body’s ability to respond to stress begins to decline
physiological systems, immune system, begins to fail and ppl are likely to get sick
short term effects of stress on immune system
- boost the immune system
- reduces activities that make the organism vulnerable
long term effects on immune system
- wear and tear your heart leading to heart failure
- makes the body less capable of warding of foreign substances
- immunity for infection and diseases decreases and starts to fail
-overstimulation of sympathetic nervous system
fight-or-flight response
the physiological preparedness to deal with danger
body postpones less immediate critical processes
tend-and-befriend
female’s tendency to respond to stressors by protecting and caring for their offspring and forming social alliances
