diathesis-stress model
stress might trigger vulnerability & generic predisposition for disorders
dimensional approach

specific phobia
fear of a specific object or situation that is exaggerated and disproportionate to the threat
social anxiety
fear of being negatively evaluated by others
generalized anxiety
nearly constant anxiety not associated with a specific object or situation
panic
sudden attacks of overwhelming terror and worry about having additional panic attacks
agoraphobia
fear of being in a inescapable situation
effects of anxiety
- hard time falling & staying asleep
- attention & concentration can be impaired
- sweating, dry mouth, rapid pulse, etc.
symptoms of social phobia
fear of social situations, public speaking, etc
symptoms of generalized anxiety
constant alertness & distractibility
symptoms of panic disorder
brought on by external stimuli & internal thought process
OCD
frequent intrusive thoughts that create anxiety and compulsive actions that temporarily reduce the anxiety
what are obsessions?
recurrent, intrusive, and unwanted thoughts/urges/or mental images that increase anxiety

PTSD
involves frequent and unwanted thoughts related to past stress or trauma, including nightmares, intrusive thoughts, and flashbacks
why is it difficult to “unlearn” the fear associated with PTSD?
ptsd interfere w/ various brain processes that normal lead to extinction in fear-learning
major depressive disorder
extremely depressed moods or loss of interest in pleasurable activities lasting for two weeks or longer (& change in weight and sleep)
persistent depressive disorder
mild or moderate depressEd mood most days for two years
bipolar I disorder
extremely elevated moods (manic episodes) lasting at least on week
bipolar II disorder
alternating between mildly elevated moods (hypomania) for at least 4 days and extremely depressed mood for at last two weeks
manic episodes
periods of abnormally and persistently mood, increased energy level and physical activity, diminished need for sleep, grandiose idea, racing thoughts, and extreme distractibility
