what is intrinsic motivation?:

the satisfaction of successfully completing a task, pride, self-satisfaction
from within

A
praise from the coach, other players, scouts
from an outside source

physical
can be touched
e.g. trophies, certificates

non-physcial
e.g. praise, concern, encouragement

intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation:
A
extrinsic -
- extrinsic rewards may create pressure on players to achieve and if they don’t get the reward, motivation can be lost. the same pressure may also promote cheating
- players compete just for the reward
intrinsic -
* more effective, stronger and long lasting, they give more satisfaction and pride and a sense of control

how to motivate:?
A
- offer rewards and incentives early on, such as ‘player of the week’
- making the activity fun and enjoyable, maybe including mini-games and easier tasks to allow success.
- pointing out the health benefits to the task
breaking the skill down into parts, to allow success on each part

what methods are used by coaches to motivate performers?:
A
- rewards, praise and positive reinforcement
- make the task fun and enjoyable
- make sure the performer can succeed
- point out the benefits of the exercise
- negative reinforcement (for experts)
- set attainable goals
- point out role models
- break the task down
- attribute success internally
