What is motivation?
The internal mechanisms and external stimuli that arouses and directs behaviour
What is drive?
Drive is directed, motivated, energised behaviour that is needed to achieve a goal.
What are the three aspects of motivation?
- Inner drive to achieve
- External pressure and rewards
- Intensity and direction of behaviour
What is arousal level?
The intensity of motivation
What its intrinsic motivation?
Motivation from an internal drive, an emotion
Give an example of intrinsic motivation.
A footballer may play football for the enjoyment of being a part of a team
What is extrinsic motivation?
Motivation for a reward
What is a tangible reward? Give an example.
Materialistic
- Money
- Trophies
What is an intangible reward? Give an example
Reward that is not physical
- praise from others
Give a sporting example of extrinsic tangible motivation?
A boxer may fight to win titles
Give a sporting example of an extrinsic intangible reward?
A footballer may play because their father wants them to
Is ‘the need to win’ extrinsic or intrinsic motivation?
It can be either, winning for pride or the trophy/bonus
What was Weinbergs view on extrinsic motivation?
“rewards do not inherently undermine intrinsic motivation” and that it is how athletes perceive the reward
