Group and Team Dynamics Flashcards
What is a group?
A group is a collection of people who share similar goals and interact with one another
Define group dynamics.
The process of which a group interacts with one another
What are the four stages in Tuckerman’s ‘model of group development?
- Forming
- Storming
- Norming
- Performing
What happens in the forming stage?
- High dependance and leadership is needed
- Roles are unclear
- There is no agreement on the aims of the team
What happens in the storming stage?
- There is arguing and conflict as people are trying to establish themselves
- Cliques start to form
- The team should avoid becoming distracted and focus
What happens in the norming stage?
- There is more agreement and important decisions are made as a group
- There is a strong sense of commitment
- There is respect for leadership as it is most likely shared
What happens in the performing stage?
- There are more tactics and a clear image
- There is less interference from the team leader
- Team works well together all of the time
What is cohesion?
The motivation which attracts individuals to the group. It is the resistance for a group breaking up
What are Festinger’s two dimensions of cohesion?
- Group integration
- Individual attraction
What is group integration?
How individual members feel about the group
What is individual attraction?
How attracted individuals are to the group
True or False: Members share similar reasons for being attracted to a group?
True
What is Steiner’s model of group effectiveness?
Relationships between individuals in a group affects group performance
(Could have the best performers but won’t necessarily have a good team)
What is the equation for Steiner’s model of group effectiveness?
Actual productivity = potential productivity - losses due to faults in the process
What is potential productivity?
The best possible performance
What are the two losses due to faulty processes?
- Co-ordination issues
- Motivation issues
What is the Ringlemann effect?
Average individual performance decreases as size of the team increases
Why does the Ringlemann effect happen?
Co-ordination and motivational issues
What is social loafing?
Individual performance decreases as group size increases
Who proposed the social loafing theory?
Latane
What does social loafing cause in relation to an individual performer?
A loss of identity and individual efforts not being noticed
Why is social loafing not desirable?
There is a loss of identity and no development of tactics
How can social loafing be limited?
Feedback and social support on individual performances
