The negative impact of arousal and experiencing stress
What is trait anxiety?
Enduring anxiety, it is a trait to the individual and the tendency to react apprehensively
How would a person with low trait anxiety act?
Calm and composed
What is state anxiety?
Anxiety is experienced but only in different scenarios
How would a person with high state anxiety act?
Apprehensive and erratic, but only in a certain situation
What is competitive anxiety?
Apprehension but only during competitive experiences
What are the factors of competitive anxiety?
- Whether the athlete has state or trait anxiety
- Individual differences in reactions
- Different types of anxiety
What is competitive trait anxiety?
The tendency to perceive competitive situations as threatening and give an apprehensive response
What is the Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT)?
Athletes self-assess levels of anxiety that they feel during a competition (competitive trait anxiety)
What are the positives of the SCAT?
- Reliable
- Predicts state competitive anxiety
What is somatic anxiety?
Physiological response to anxiety, such as, headaches and increased Heart Rate
What is cognitive anxiety?
Psychological response to anxiety, such as, worry or loss of concentration
How does cognitive state anxiety change in relation to competition?
It increases but doesn’t increase directly before
How does somatic state anxiety change in relation to competition?
Low prior to competition, but increases a few hours before
What effect do high levels of cognitive state anxiety and somatic state anxiety have on a performance?
A catastrophic effect
