A

Contraindications:

  • hypersensitivity
  • late second stage labour
  • renal impairment / failure

Precautions: (HACE-BMA)

# H: hypotension
# A: opioid addiction / acute alcoholism 
# C: COPD / respiratory depression
# E: elderly / frail patients
# B: burns involving the respiratory tract
# M: monoamine oxidase inhibitors (anti- depressants) 
# A: current asthma

A

Central Nervous System effects:

  • euphoria
  • drowsiness
  • addiction
  • pin point pupils
  • respiratory depression
  • nausea / vomiting

Cardiovascular effects:

  • bradycardia
  • hypotension

A

An opioid analgesic with
Central Nervous System effects: CNS depression resulting in analgesia, respiratory depression and suppression of the cough reflex
and
Cardiovascular effects: vasodilation and decreased conduction velocity through the AV node

A

IV effects:

  • onset: 2-5 mins
  • peak: 10 mins
  • duration: 1-2 hours

IM effects:

  • onset: 10-30 mins
  • peak: 30-60 mins
  • duration: 1-2 hours
