Contraindications:
- hypersensitivity
- late second stage labour
- renal impairment / failure
Precautions: (HACE-BMA)
# H: hypotension # A: opioid addiction / acute alcoholism # C: COPD / respiratory depression # E: elderly / frail patients
# B: burns involving the respiratory tract # M: monoamine oxidase inhibitors (anti- depressants) # A: current asthma

- euphoria
- drowsiness
- addiction
- pin point pupils
- respiratory depression
- nausea / vomiting
Cardiovascular effects:
- bradycardia
- hypotension

Central Nervous System effects: CNS depression resulting in analgesia, respiratory depression and suppression of the cough reflex

Cardiovascular effects: vasodilation and decreased conduction velocity through the AV node

IV effects:
- onset: 2-5 mins
- peak: 10 mins
- duration: 1-2 hours
IM effects:
- onset: 10-30 mins
- peak: 30-60 mins
- duration: 1-2 hours
