What is Budd-Chiari syndrome?
A blood clot (thrombosis) develops in the hepatic vein, blocking the outflow of blood
What is Budd-Chiari syndrome associated with?
It is associated with hyper-coagulable states
What does Budd-Chiari syndrome cause?
It causes an acute hepatitis.
How does Budd-Chiari syndrome present?
Classic Triad:
Abdominal pain
Hepatomegaly
Ascites
What is the management of Budd-Chiari syndrome?
Anticoagulation- heparin or warfarin
Investigating for the underlying cause of hyper-coagulation
Treating the hepatitis.
What is does a Microvascular thrombus?
Involves platelets and fibrin
What can a microvascular thrombus lead to?
Can lead to microvascular diffuse ischaemia
In who is a microvascular thrombus usually seen?
In very unwell patients in high intensity care due to DIC
What does DIC stand for?
Diffuse intravascular Coagulation
In who does DIC occur?
Patients with septicaemia
Pregnancy complications: Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia
