Q

how to measure serotonin level in human brain

A

The pet scan and tracer method works well on dopamine.
->new molecule with same affinity for the serotonin NT

Radioactive tracer injected and it binds to a specific target

Can measure how much of the tracer has binded to receptor -> work out receptor numbers

A pharmaceutical challenge can be given to cause the release of neurotransmitters from the pre synaptic vesicles

Serotonin and tracer fight each other to bind to a receptor. More serotonin= more tracers kicked out
