ICD-10 (international classification of disease)
how does ICD-10 define mood disorder- 4 points
-[change in mood] to depression (+/-anxiety) or to happiness.
-change in [activity level]
-[symptoms] mostly [secondary] to mood change.
-[recurrent] disorder and the onset related to [stressful events].
DSM-5 criteria for depressive episodes
(2 weeks+) of depressive mood AND 4/8 of:
-Sleep alterations (insomnia or hypersomnia)
-Appetite alterations (increased or decreased)
-Diminished interest or anhedonia
-Decreased concentration
-Low energy
-Guilt
-Psychomotor changes (agitation or retardation)
-Suicidal thoughts
major depressive disorder

manic episode DSM-5 diagnosis:overall
Euphoric/irritable mood with 3/7 of:
-Decreased need for sleep with increased energy
-Distractibility
-inflated self-esteem
-Flight of ideas or racing thoughts
-Increased talkativeness
-Increased goal-directed activities or psychomotor agitation
-Impulsive behaviour (such as sexual impulsivity or spending sprees)
-symptoms: 1 week+
-functional impairment
what is this and which bipolar disorder?
a manic episode is diagnosed, leading to a DSM-5 diagnosis of type I bipolar disorder
-symptoms: 4 days+
-can function
what is this?
hypomanic episode
No manic episode.
Only hypomanic episodes
Major depressive episode (at least once),
then the DSM-5 diagnosis:
type II bipolar disorder
If manic symptoms occur for less than 4 days, or if other specific thresholds are not met for manic or hypomanic episodes, then the DSM-5 diagnosis:
Unspecified Bipolar Disorder
when is it automatically not hypomania?
psychotic features are present/pt is hospitalised
what is cyclothymia
mild version of bipolar- don’t meet criteria for maniac and depressive episodes but still effect their life and can develop into bipolar if left untreated
