momentum & conservation of momentum. Flashcards
what is the formula?
momentum= mass ×
velocity.
p=m×v.
mass= kg.
velocity= m/s.
momentum= kgm/s
vector.
what is a closed system?
unable to exchange energy and matter with their surroundings and isn’t affected by external forces eg: friction.
what is the principle of conservation of momentum?
in a closed system the total momentum before an event is equal to total momentum after the event. applies to explosions and collisions.
how is the velocity affected, how is momentum affected and how is the total momentum affected?
velocity (and hence momentum) of one object decreased and the other increased.
momentum lost by 1 was equal to the momentum gained by mass 2.
total momentum before the collision was equal to the total momentum after the collision.
