lifecycle of a star. Flashcards
what is the first stage?
cloud of gas made mostly of hydrogen pulled together by gravity.
what does it form in the second stage?
protostar.
what happens in stage 3, what does it make what is equal and why?
fusion.
hydrogen to give helium and energy.
main sequence star- gravity and force due to radiation are equal.
after fusion what is possible to happen?
become a red giant where the atoms up to carbon and oxygen.
red super giant- firm iron.
what happens after a red giant is produced?
white dwarf.
what happens after a white dwarf is produced?
black dwarf.
what is made after a red super giant, what does it do and what dies that produce?
supernova.
sends out some material.
shock waves produce larger atoms.
what are the 2 possibilities after a supernova?
black hole- light can’t escape.
neutron star.
when is helium and small nuclei up to carbon made?
main sequence.
what is the half life of uranium?
4500 million years.
what is the half life of plutonium 239?
24000 years.
what is the age of the solar system?
4.5 billion years ago.
what did the early université only contain?
hydrogen.
where were the heaviest elements formed?
supernova.
what star can be made into supernova?
star much bigger than the sun.
