waves. Flashcards
what is the wave length?
distance from one part of the wave to the same part on the next wave.
what is wave length measured in?
metres (m.)
what is frequency?
how many waves go past every second.
what is frequency measured in?
hertz.
what is a period?
length of time it takes for one complete cycle to occur.
what are periods measured in?
seconds (s.)
what are transverse waves?
vibration causing the wave is perpendicular to the direction along which the energy is transferred. (not matter.) energy transferred by oscillations in the material which the wave is travelling through. light and waves on the surface of water are transverse waves.
what are longitudinal waves?
movement of vibration causing the wave is parallel to the direction along which energy is transferred. have areas of compression and refraction. energy transferred not matter. sound waves are longitudinal waves.
what is the definition for wave speed?
speed at which a wave transfers energy through a medium.
