Consciousness
sense of agency and intention, control over your behavior
- awareness of self, bodily sensations, thoughts and environment
Why do we sleep?
Restorative function, cell growth, immune function, muscle rest
Low Awareness
some cues (significant sensory info) will automatically elicit a response from us even though we never consciously perceive it.
Priming
readily activating certain concepts and associations from one’s memory
High Awareness
effortful attention and careful decision making
Mindfullness
state of higher consciousness that includes an awareness of the thoughts passing through one’s head
Flexible Correction Model
people who are aware that their thoughts or behavior are being influenced by an undue, outside source, can correct their attitude against the bias
Hypnosis
To transfix or entrance a person’s attention
- Mental state characterized by reduced peripheral awareness and increased focus on a singular stimulus
Dissociation
Separation of one’s awareness from everything besides what one is centrally focused on
Less effortful, less self-conscious
4 Stages of Sleep
1/ NREM1: falling asleep (theta waves)
- NREM2: light sleep, 55% of sleep, high intensity waves
- NREM3: greater muscle relaxation, 20-25% of sleep (delta waves)
- REM: rapid eye movement, brain awake,, 20% of sleep
Hallucinogens
Alter a person’s perceptions, often by creating visions or hallucinations that are not real
ex) marijuana, LSD, MDMA
Depressant
Slow down the body’s physiology and mental processes
ex) Alcohol
Stimulants
Speed up body’s physiological and mental processes
ex) caffeine and nicotine, cocaine, meth
