module 8 (photosynthesis) Flashcards
define photosynthesis
the process where plants and some other organisms convert light energy into chemical energy
what is the order of a food web?
producer -> primary consumer -> secondary consumer -> tertiary consumer etc.
define a food web
a diagram showing the interlinked food chains of an ecosystem
define interdependent (food web)
all organisms rely on one and another for survival
what is each level of a food web called
trophic level
define sampling
collecting observations or measurements from a smaller area which is representative of a larger area
define distribution
where an organism is found
define abundance
the number of organisms present
define a identification key
identifies living organisms by asking a series of questions about an organisms characteristics
what is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
what are the conditions for photosynthesis?
sunlight + chlorophyl
what is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
6CO(2)+ 6H(2)O -> C(6)H(12)O(6) + 6O(2)
where do the reactants of photosynthesis come from?
water is absorbed through root hail cells in soil, travels in tube called xylem, up the stem and in the leaves
carbon dioxide is taken in by small holes on the underside of the leaves called stomata by diffusion
what are the products of photosynthesis used for?
glucose - respiration, growth, fruit production
how do you test a leaf for starch?
3 leaves - (kept in light, kept in dark, variegated leaf in light)
submerge the leaf in a beaker of boiling water (wait 3-5mins)
fill 1/3 of boiling tube w ethanol, place in hot water bath
submerge leaf in ethanol for 5 mins
wash leaf in water bath
carefully lay leaf on petri dish and test w iodine
