module 2 (ecology) Flashcards
define pollination
the transfer of pollen grains from the anther (where they are produced) to the stigma (plant reproduction)
define self pollination
the transfer of pollen from the stamen to the stigma of the same plant
define cross pollination
the transfer of pollen from the stamen of one plant to the stigma of a different plant
define receptacle
the stalk which the flower sits
define sepals
green and fleshy and protect the delicate flower parts when still in bud
define petals
brightly coloured and attract insects to visit the flower
define stamens
the male parts of a flower
define carpel
the female part of a flower
define anther
produces pollen for the male part of the flower
define stigma
where the pollen is collected
define ovary
contains the ovules
define style
transfers pollen from the stigma to the ovary
define filament
produces pollen for the stigma
define seed dispersal
the movement, spread or transport of seeds away from the parent plant
what are the four types of seed dispersal?
wind, water, animals and birds, bursting
define a habitat
the place where an organism lives
define an identification key
a tool which enables us to identify organisms based on characteristics by answering questions about them
define predator
an animal that hunts and kills other organisms for food
define prey
an animal that predators kill for food
define sampling
collecting observations or measurements from a small area which is representative of a larger area
define distribution
where an organism is found
define abundance
the number of certain species present
what is random sampling?
uses quadrants and a grid to study the abundance of organisms over an area (samples are taken at random positions to prevent bias)
what is non random sampling?
uses a transect to study how the distribution of organisms changes over a distance (samples are taken at fixed positions over a line)
define quadrat
a square frame divided into a grid used for random sampling
