module 4 (energy) Flashcards
what are the nine different types of energy?
electrostatic, sound, light, thermal, chemical, kinetic, gravitational potential, elastic potential, nuclear
what do energy flow diagrams show?
energy transfer
define useful energy
energy transferred to an item that allows it to carry out a task
define wasted energy
energy which dissipates (escapes) into the surroundings
what is energy measured in?
joules (J)
what is the equation for energy supplied
energy supplied= useful energy + wasted energy
define the conservation of energy
we cant lose or gain energy (energy can be transferred, stored of dissipated but cannot be created nor destroyed)
define non renewable (finite)
limited in number - once its used up it can be restored, the rate at which this can happen takes too long in comparison to its usage
define renewable
constantly replenished and not exhausted
define fossil fuels
natural finite fuels, formed from the remains of living organisms
what are the six main types of renewable energy?
solar, wind, hydroelectric, wave, biofuel, geothermal
what is the calculation for energy efficiency?
energy efficiency = useful energy / total energy used x100
what is the calculation for power?
power (w) = energy transferred (j) / time taken (s)
what unit is power measured in?
watts
how do power stations work?
1) fossils fuels are burnt, chemical energy turns into heat
2) heat boils water and turns it into gas (steam)
3) steam rises, turns turbine, heat turns into kinetic
4) generator turns kinetic into electrical
5) step down transformer ensures energy is appropriate for all electrical devices
