Ectopic Pregnancy
A
Implantation of a fetilizied ovum outside the uterine cavity. 98% occur in the fallopian tube (most commonly in the ampulla of the tube)

A
Most common cause is scarred fallopian tubes

Signs and Symptoms of Ectopic Pregnancy
A
- Missed menstrual period
- Positive Pregnancy Test
- Abdominal PAIN
- Vaginal “spotting”

Therapeutic Management of Ectopic Pregnancy
A
- Confirm ectopic pregnancy by ultrasound and hcg levels
- Monitor bleeding
- If tube is intact: methotrexate (chemotherapy drug, interrupts cellular division therefore stopping the growth of the fetus and saving the tube), salpingostomy
- If tube has ruptured: salpingectomy
- Follow up: rhogam, counseling
