Q

what is prey switching?

A

there are several possible explanations for a sigmoidal type III response:
-availability of cover: the susceptibility of prey individuals will increase as the population grows and hiding places become filled
-search image: the ability of a predator to recognize a prey species will increase as the prey population size increases
-prey switching: the act of a predator turning to a more abundant alternate prey

Q

what is the predator numerical response?

A

-the ability of a predator population to regulate a prey population is related to the response of predators to increase in number in relation to prey
-predator populations grow slowly in comparison to those of their prey and dynamics lag that of prey

Q

what is the predator total response?

A

predation rate, or the probability for a time interval that an individual prey will die of predation, relates to prey density via the total response
-the total response is the product of the functional and numerical response of the predator to prey density

18
Q

what is an example of predator total response?

A

if at density of 100 moose/1000km2 and over the course of year the capture rate is 1.5 moose/wolf (functional response), and there is an expected 10 wolves supported by 100 moose/1000km2 (numerical response), 15 moose are expected to die of predation in a year (1.5 moose x 10 wolves)
-the expected predation rate is 15 moose out of 100, or 15%

20
Q

what is the predator total response and predator pit?

A

anything that makes it easier for predators to capture prey (ie: steepen the functional response, will steepen the predation rate)
-especially so at lower prey densities

this can lead to what is called a “predator pit”
-prey cannot escape from ow density due to increasing predation pressure

21
Q

what is the trend in bison population, Wood Buffalo National Park?

A
