module 6 - 19.7 linkage, gender & sex linkage Flashcards
what are sex chromosomes?
chromosomes that carry the sex-determining genes
what are autosomes?
- any chromosome that isn’t a sex chromosome
- autosomes may have same genes but different alleles of genes
what are alleles?
different versions of a gene
what are chromosomes arranged into?
homologous pairs
what does it mean if we say that genes are linked?
when 2 genes appear on the same chromosome
what is autosomal linkage?
when 2 or more genes appear on the same autosome
what is the number of linkage groups equal to?
haploid number of chromosomes because each chromosome carries the same genes as its homologous partner
what can genes that exhibit autosomal linkage not do?
cannot segregate independently at meiosis (metaphase 1)
what is sex linkage?
the expression of an allele dependent on the gender of the individual as the gene is located on a sex chromosome
what are sex linked genes?
genes located on a sex chromosome, so allele expression depends on the sex of the individual
