BONDS Flashcards
what are phosphodiester bonds?
the bond between the phosphate on a nucleotide and the sugar on the adjacent nucleotides
what does the phosphate group at the 5th pentose carbon sugar form?
covalent bonds with hydroxyl (OH) group at the 3rd carbon of the pentose sugar of adjacent nucleotide
how are phosphodiester bonds broken?
hydrolysis
what are hydrogen bonds?
- bonds formed when positive & negative regions of molecule attract each other
- when polar molecules interact they form hydrogen bonds
are hydrogen bonds strong or weak?
weak interactions (single bonds) but stronger when they occur in high numbers
where do hydrogen bonds occur?
in dipoles
what do hydrogen bonds do between the moving water molecules?
break and reform
what are ester bonds?
they form when a triglyceride from glycerol bonds with 3 fatty acids to produce 3 water molecules
how are triglycerides broken down?
hydrolysis
what are glycosidic bonds?
bonds formed between either carbons 1-4 or 1-6 on the glucose molecule
