Time it takes for lithium to reach peak levels
1-1.5 hours
4-5 hours with controlled release
Time it takes for lithium to reach equilibrium
5-7 days
half life of lithium
18-24 hours
shorter in children, longer in older adults
Controls acute manic episodes
takes 1-3 weeks for full effects of antimania
Lithium
Best course when depression occurs while patient is on maintenance lithium
Increase concentration to 1-1.2 mEq. OR Add Cytomel (thyroid hormone)
Drugs that increase concentrations of lithium
NSAIDs
Thiazide diuretics
ACE Inhibitors
Metronidazole

When to take lithium levels
12 hours after last dose
Therapeutic level of Depakote
50-100 mmol/L
Half life of Depakote
10-16 hours
Average length of response to Depakote for acute mania
5 days
Useful to decrease agitation and impulsivity
Depakote
Side effects of. Depakote
