What happens in excitement?
Genitals full with blood and lubricate. Breathing and pulse become rapid
What is plateau?
The changes in excitement reach a peak

Enlarged genitals release blood

Behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, and medication

Rise in estrogen and testosterone

Inadequate communication, guilt, alcohol use
What contributes to sexual restrain in adolescence?
Abstinence education, high test scores, strong religious beliefs, father in the home, and volunteer work

Ones preferences of an object of sexual attraction
When does orientation emerge?
In puberty
What’s at risk when having a homosexual orientation?
Anxiety and mood disorders because of discrimination
What is the fraternal birth order effect?
Being born after a brother increases the likelihood of being gay
What are some biological differences associated with sexual preference?
A hypothalamic is smaller in women and gay men, male homosexuality is from the mothers side, altered prenatal hormone exposure
What is belonging?
Being connected to others
What are the evolutionary aspects about the need to belong?
Mutual protection, division in labor, emotional support
What are the downsides to belonging?
Staying in abusive relationships, joining gangs, changing appearances
What are the effects of ostrasization?
Real physical pain
