What is motivation?
A need or desire that energizes behavior and directs it towards a goal
What is an instinct?
A fixed pattern of behavior that is likely to be rooted in genes and the body
What is a drive?
An aroused state that is related to a physical need
What is drive-reduction theory?
The idea that humans are motivated to reduce drives such as eating when hunger arises
What is Maslows hierarchy of needs?
The idea that basic needs need to be satisfied before motivation sets in to pursue higher goals
What happens when you cut a persons food intake in half?
They become obsessed with food
What is in charge of sending appetite suppressing or stimulating hormones?
Hypothalamus
What is a set point?
A stable weight to which a person keeps returning to
What contributes to differences in taste preference?
Culture, aversions, conditioning
What is social facilitation?
The presence of others accentuates our typical eating habits
What is unit bias?
We may eat only one serving of food but will eat more if the serving size is larger
What is the buffet effect?
We eat more if more options are available
What can override your set point?
Psychological disorders and biological tendencies
What is obesity?
The amount of body fat that increases the risk of health problems
