Module 3 Flashcards
What are the layers of the blood vessels and their characteristics?
Tunica intima- innermost, single epithelial layer
Tunica media- middle smooth muscle layer
Tunica adventitia- outer loose connective layer
What types of arteries are there and what are their characteristics?
Elastic- thicker TI, TA is thinnest
Muscular- more prominent TM, thin TI
Arterioles- TM is thickest, thin TI and TA
What happens to elastic tissue as vessels become smaller?
It decreases
What are the characteristics of capillaries?
No TM
Thin TI and TA
What are metarterioles?
Slightly larger
Discontinuous layer of smooth muscle
What types of veins are there and what are their characteristics?
Venules- no TM, thin TI and TA
Small and medium- TM is thin, TA is thick
Large- thick TA, thin TI and TM
What is the vasa vasorum?
Vessels that supply larger vessels
What is the function of the lymphatic system?
Drains excess tissue fluids
When is lymph produced?
When the venous side of a capillary bed doesn’t reabsorb the tissue fluid
What types of lymphatic vessels are there and what are their characteristics?
Capillaries- no TM, thin TI and TA
Large vessels- slightly thicker TA
What are the functions of the circulatory system?
Temperature regulation
Distribution of molecules
