REM
(rapid eye movement) high levels of brain and nervous activity
sleep mentation
any and all mental activity during sleep (sleep thinking and dreaming)
sleep thinking
directed thought that occurs during NREM sleep
ordinary dreaming
realistic activities and recognizable characters
Apex dreams
Intense, out of the world, vivid, non-realistic dreams
insomnia
Hard time falling or staying asleep
Parasomnia
unwanted and distruptive motor activities
REM sleep behavior disorder
muscle paralysis. REM sleep phase does not occur.
sleep apnea
stops breathing when you sleep. can last 10-20 seconds.
Narcolepsy
can’t resist falling asleep at random times.
Physical dependence
changes in normal bodily function
Psychological dependence
emotional dependence, need to relieve stress
tolerance
immunity towards the drug. Need more to feel the affect
withdrawal
negative experience when you stop using the drug.
What is hypnosis?
focused, not aware of external stimuli
What are the parts to hypnosis?
- Individual is guided to focus on one thing
- Always made relaxed

2 theories - dissociation and social role

dissociated state of consciousness
social role
performing the social role of a hypnotized person
What is meditation?
act of focusing on a single target to increase awareness.
What is the central feature of meditation?
clearing the mind to achieve a state of relaxed awareness and focus
What are the origins of meditation?
Buddhist, Hindu or yogi practices.
What are the potential benefits of meditation?
stress management, sleep quality, treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, and pain management.
