Module 2: Process of Aerobic Glycolysis Flashcards
What is aerobic glycolysis
the breakdown of glucose into pyruvate when there is oxygen present
What is the first step of glycolysis
A 6-carbon glucose molecule is split in half by hexokinase
the 6-carbon glucose is split into what
2 molecules of pyruvate, each have 3 carbon molecules
What is the second step, what happens to pyruvate
it is oxidized, one of the carbon molecules combines with oxygen to create CO2 and remove it, this leaves behind 2 carbon molecules
What is the third step, what happens to the 2 remaining carbon molecules
Combine with a CoA group to form acetyl CoA
How many acetyl CoA are created
2
Where does the acetyl CoA go
Enters the Kreb Cycle (Citric acid cycle)
What leads to anaerobic glycolysis
lack of oxygen supply
What happens during anaerobic glycolysis
pyruvate is converted into lactate through fermentation
