Chapter 2: Cell Structure Flashcards
What is the plasma membrane
a barrier between the cell and the external enviornment
What is the plasma membrane made of
a bilayer of phospholipids
What is the role of cholesterol in the plasma membrane
decreases the permeability
What is the role of integral proteins
serve as receptors, pores, and enzymes
What is the cytoplasm
all of the content within the cell membrane
What is the cytosol
A part of the cell membrane, the fluid present in the cell membrane (intracellular fluid)
What are the components of a cell
- Plasma membrane
- Cytoplasm
- Nucleus
What are non-membranous organelles
organelles that have no membrane/not membrane bound
What are the non-membranous organelles
Ribosomes
What are ribosomes
Composed of RNA + Protein, used to build proteins
What are the membranous organelles
Rough ER, Smooth ER, Golgi apparatus, Mitochondria, Nucleus
What is the rough endoplasmic reticulum
have ribosomes attached to them, functions are to synthesis proteins to be packaged into vesicles
What is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum
responsible for lipid synthesis and storing calcium
What is the golgi apparatus
it modifies and packages the proteins
What is the mitocondria
makes ATP through a process called oxidative phosphorylation
