Module 2: Osmosis Flashcards
What is osmosis
The flow of water across a membrane, it is a type of passive diffusion through channels, down the concentration gradient
Is osmosis passive or active
always passive
What is osmolarity
the total solute particle concentration of a solution, also known as the osmotic pressure
How does solute move in osmosis
from area of low concentration to are of high concentration
What is iso-osmotic
two solutions with an equal osmolarity
What is hyperosmotic
a solution whose osmolarity is higher than another, more solute
What is hypo-osmotic
a solution whose osmolarity is lower than another, less solute
What happens to a cell placed in a hypo-osmotic solution
The cell will swell, water will move from the solution into the cell
What happens to a cell placed in a hyper-osmotic solution
The cell will shrink, water will move from the cell out to the solution
What does it mean to be iso-osmotic
When two solutions have an equal osmolarity
