Module 2 - Inflammation Flashcards
What is inflammation?
the body’s non-specific response to tissue injury, resulting in redness, swelling, warmth, and pain, and perhaps loss of function
What are the three main lines of defence for the body?
First line of defence - non specific mechanical barriers
2nd line of defence - non-specific mechanisms,Includes the non specific processes of phagocytosis and inflammation
3rd - Specific mechanisms in the body
Describe the first line of defence
- non-specific, mechanical barrier such as skin or mucous membranes that blocks entry of bacteria or harmful substances into the tissues
- Secretion such as tears and gastric juices
describe the second line of defence
Non-specific processes of phagocytosis and inflammation
Describe the third line of defence
- Specific defence
- Production of specific antibodies or cell mediated immunity
What are the acute affects of burns?
Any burn injury causes an acute inflammatory response and release of chemical mediators, resulting in a major fluid shift, edema, and decreased blood volume
What are the three types of healing?
Resolution, regeneration, replacement
What is resolution?
The process that occurs when there is minimal tissue damage
Tissue returns to normal within a short period of time
What is regeneration?
The healing process that occurs in damage tissue in which the cells are capable of mitosis
What is replacement?
Replacement by connective tissue (scar or fibrous tissue formation) takes place when there’s extensive tissue damage or the cells are incapable of mitosis (ex. the brain or myocardium)
What are 4 drugs for inflammation
- Acetaminophen
- Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin)
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS - Ibuprofen)
- Glucocorticoids
Scar tissue Consist primarily of
Collagen fibres
What are the 3 chemical mediators that are released by the mast cell
Prostaglandins, histamine, Bradykinin
