Exam 2 Flashcards
What are the three Ps of hyperglycemia?
Polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia
What is polyuria? Leads to?
Excess glucose spills into the urine and is excreted - causes water to follow the higher osmotic pressure of the urine (increase water loss)
What is polydipsia? Results in?
Fluid loss of polyuria draws out water from cells, leading to dehydration. Results in the “condition of much thirst”
What is polyphagia? Results in?
Lack of nutrients specifically glucose entering the cells stimulate appetite in order to increase nutrient intake. Leads to condition of much eating
In the development of diabetic ketoacidosis – decreased insulin secretion or increased insulin resistant cells leads to what?
Decrease glucose transport into cells
Decreased Glucose transport into cells leads to?
Polyphagia (hunger), Hyperglycaemia, glycogenolysis, lipolysis
What type of infection is the common cold?
Infectious rhinitis - Viral infection
