Mitral valve prolapse Flashcards
What is mitral valve prolapse?
Structural defect of the mitral valve that results in /mitral leaflets bulging into the left atrium during systole
What are the causes of mitral valve prolapse?
Connective tissue disorders (myxomatous degeneration (deposition of glycosaminoglycan such as dermatan sulfate): Marfan syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
Myocardial infarction
Acute rheumatic heart disease
Infective endocarditis
What are the clinical features of mitral valve regurgitation?
Mostly asymptomatic
(Auscultation) Mitral valve prolapse click (mid-late systolic) at mitral region
How is mitral valve regurgitation diagnosed?
Transthoracic echocardiography (shows mirtal valve displacement)
What is the treatment for mitral valve regurgitation?
Exercise in most cases
