What is anaphylactic shock?
A
Type I hyper-sensitivity reaction due to release of histamine

What is the pathophysiology of anaphylactic shock?
A
IgE antibody-mediated hypersensitivity reaction → degranulation of mast cells → massive histamine release → systemic vasodilation, increased capillary leakage

What causes anaphylactic shock?
A
Drugs (i.e. penicillin, contrast media)
Food allergies

What are the clinical features of anaphylactic shock?
A
Tachycardia, tachypnea
Hypotension with a narrow pulse pressure
Flushed, itchy skin
Bronchospasm, laryngeal edema
