Mitosis Flashcards
What is one chromosome arm?
A chromatid
When is dna replication?
During interphase
Most of the time the cell is in interphase
What is prophase?
Two chromosomes join at its centromere
Chromosomes condense from chromatin
Nucleo envelopes disappear
What is metaphase?
Chromosomes line up at the equator
They are attached to the mitotic spindle by the centromere
What is anaphase
Chromosomes split and get pulled apart as the spindle fibres contract
Sister chromatids separate
And are pulled apart by centromere
What is telophase?
The cell elongates and uncoils its chromosomes
Nuclear envelope reforms
What is mitotic index and how do we work it out?
Visible chromosomes divided by all chromosomes visible
What are the naturally occurring cell checks in the cell cycle
Occur in interphase and metaphase
If there’s unfixable DNA damage then it will undergo apoptosis
What is apoptosis
Where a cell dies by itself because it contains unfxable DNA damage
However cancer cells continue to divide
What is a tumour and cancer
Tumour - uncontrollable cell division
Cancer - uncontrollable cell division which has invaded healthy cells
