HIV Replication Flashcards

1
Q

How does HIV replicate inside T helper cells

A
  1. Attachment proteins attach to the receptor molecules complementary to them on the t helper cell
  2. The capsid is released into the cell , it uncials and releases rna into the cytoplasm
  3. Reverse transcriptase makes complementary strand of dna from the viral rna template
4.this makes dna which is inserted into the dna of the host human cell
5.the host cells enzymes are used to make proteins and rna which is assembled into new viruses
  4. New virus bud from the cell and infect other cells - burst the cell eventually

Q

How does the HIV cause the symptoms of aids

A
  • t helper cell count drops
-immune system deteriorates and eventually fails
-the person is then vulnerable to other infections more
    -antibiotics can’t treat

Q

What’s the treatment of HIV

A

•Antiretroviral drugs (ART) - drugs which prevent the infection or replication of the HIV virus;
• Shown to dramatically decrease the viral load in HIV positive individuals to undetectable levels
• May not be effective against dormant HIV just HIV that is actively replicating at the time.
•Pre exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) - the taking of ART by sexually active adults to prevent the infection by HIV
•Some patients have been cured due to stem cell transplants - replacement of bone marrow so they now produce helper T cells that can’t be infected by HIV

Q

Why do antibiotics only kill bacteria cells

A

-they prevent cell replication , however the virus replicates inside our own cells
- prevents protein synthesis - how ever viruses use our cells to do that
-prevents formation of cell wall however virus don’t have murine cell wall
