Mitosis Flashcards
DNA
Genetic material that organisms inherit from their parents.
Chromatin
Uncondensed chromosomes
Chromosome
Contains DNA; is found in the nucleus and consists of thread-like proteins.
Chromatid
One of two identical ¨sister¨ parts of a duplicated chromosome.
Centromere
Constricted region of a chromosome that separates into a short arm and long arm.
Centrioles
Paired barrel-shaped organelles located in the cytoplasm of animal cells that make spindle fibers.
Spindle fibers
Structures that attach to centromere during cell division.
Diploid
Refers to a cell that contains two sets of homologous chromosomes.
Cell cycle
Series of events that contains two sets of homologous chromosomes.
Cell cycle
Series of events in which a cell grows prepares for cell division and divides to form two daughter cells.
Cell cycle
Series of events in which a cell grows prepares for cell division and divides to form two daughter cells.
Interphase
Resting phase or period of the cell cycle during cell division.
Mitosis
Part of eukaryotic cell division during which the cell nucleus divides.
Prophase
First and longest phase of mitosis chromosomes duplicate and condense and become visible. Nuclear membrane begins to dissolve.
Metaphase
Second phase of mitosis. Chromosomes line up across the middle of the cell along the metaphase plate.
Anaphase
Third phase of mitosis. Chromosomes are pulled apart by the spindle fibers, separate at the centromere and migrate to opposite ends of the cell.
Telophase
Final phase of mitosis where a cleavage furrow forms (in animal cells)and distinct chromosomes begin to tangle into chromatin and the nuclear membrane begins to re-appear in tow distinct daughter cells.
Cytokenesis
The complete division of the cytoplasm during cell division to form two separate daughter cells.
Cell plate
A structure that forms in the cell od land plants while they are undergoing cell division from telophase.
Cleavage furrow
An indentation that in a cells surface when the cell is preparing to divide during telophase in cell division.
Cancer
Uncontrolled cell division and growth that results in a tumor
Mutation
Any change in DNA or the genetic material of a cell.
Mutagen
A chemical or physical agent that can cause a mutation.
Oncogene
A mutated gene that contributes to the development of cancer.
