Cell organelles & Their function Flashcards
Cell membrane
A flexible barrier that controls the movement of molecules, gases, and ions in and out of the cell. It is porous (semi-permeable) and only allows small particles to flow through.
Nucleus
Contains DNA (genetic material); controls all cell activities.
Mitochondria
Responsible for making energy in the form of ATP through the process of cellular respiration
Ribosomes
Responsible for making proteins for the cell
Chloroplasts
Converts light energy into chemical energy through the process of photosynthesis. Only found in plant cells.
Cell wall
A rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane. It provides support and protection for plant cells
Vacuole
Stores water, food, and other substances for the cell. Large central vacuoles exist in plant cells; extremely small or not present in animal cells
Lysomes
Contain digestive enzymes that help break down worn out cell parts to be disposed of by the cell
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Smooth- Lacks ribosomes on its surface. Is attracted to the ends of rough ER. Makes cell products that are used inside the cell
Rough- Contains ribosomes. Involved with the transport of cell products and proteins outside of the cell
Golgi Body
Appear as flattened stacks that modify, sort and package molecules from the endoplasmic reticulum
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like substance that fills that cell and holds organelles in place
