Cell structure & Function Flashcards
Cell
Basic unit of life
Tissue
Groups of cells working together to perform some function
Organ
Tissues working together to perform a function
Organ system
Various organs working together to perform a function
Organism
Possess all the characteristics of life
Population
Number of all the organisms of the same group or species who live in a particular geographical area and are capable of interbreeding.
Community
Several interacting groups of species in a common location.
Ecosystem
Community of living organisms and their physical environment.
Biome
Large area characterized by its vegetation, soil, climate, and wildlife.
Biosphere
The regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of Earth occupied by organisms.
Cell theory
-Developed by Schleiden, Schwann , and Virchow
-All living things are made up of cells
-Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in an organism (basic unit of life)
- Cells come from the reproduction of existing cells (cell division)
Unicellular
Composed of one cell
Multicellular
Composed of more than one cell
Prokaryote
a cell that contains NO nucleus and no membrane-bound organelles: only contains cell membrane; cytoplasm and ribosomes. First life form which evolved 3.5-3.8 bya (bacteria)
Eukaryote
A cell that contains a nucelus and membrane-0bound organelles. (Animal, plant, protists, fungus.) Evolved through endosymbiosis.
