Mitosis Flashcards
What is “DNA?”
- The chemical molecule from which chromosomes are made.
What are “chromosomes?”
- Chromosomes are thread- like structure, made up of DNA.
What is a “gene?”
- A gene is a session of DNA that codes for a characteristic.
How many pairs of chromsomes are found in human cells?
- 23 pairs
What 2 components are chromosomes made up of?
- DNA
- Proteins
What are the 3 MAIN stages to the cell cycle?
1.) DNA replicates to form 2 copies of each chromosome
1.) Cell grows and structures (ribosomes and mitochondria) replicate.
2.) One set of chromomes pulled to either end of cell, nucleus divides. (mitosis)
3.) Cell membrane and cytoplasm divide and form 2 identical daughter cells. (mitosis)
What is the same about the mother cell and daughter cells?
- They have the same genetic information.
- SAME NUMBER of chromosomes.
Give 2 reasons mitosis is important.
- Growth
- Development
What type of cells does mitosis occur in?
- Mitosis occurs in somatic cells (ALL except gametes.)
What is the cell cycle?
- The cell cycle is a series of steps a cell undergoes to prepare and carry out mitosis.
Give 2 examples of sub-cellular structures that are duplicated before mitosis.
1.) Ribosomes
2.) Mitochondria
In what way does the DNA replicate?
–> Forms 2 copies of each chromosone.
Q.)
In Step 3 the cells are given oxygen and water.
Name two other substances the cells need so they can grow and divide.
- Protein
- Glucose
What carries genes in your nucelus?
- Chromosomes carry genes.
