Lesson 1: Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
What is “cellular respiration?”
A
- Cellular respiration is an exothermic reaction which is continuously occurring in living cells.
- Energy released supplies all energy needed for living processes.
2
Q
What type of reaction is respiration?
A
- Exothermic
- Releases energy
3
Q
What is the energy released/ transferred from respiration used for?
A
- It is used for all living processes:
- Chemical reactions to build larger molecules ie. building up amino acids –> proteins.
- Muscle contraction (movement)
- To keep warm.
4
Q
What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
A
- Aerobic (with oxygen.)
- Anaerobic (without oxygen.)
5
Q
What is the symbol equation for respiration?
A
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ –> 6CO₂ + 6H₂O
6
Q
Which releases more energy: aerobic/ anaerobic respiration?
Why…?
A
- Aerobic
- The glucose molecule has been fully oxidised.
7
Q
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in muscle cells?
A
Glucose –> lactic acid
8
Q
Why is less energy released in anaerobic respiration?
A
- As the oxidation of glucose is incomplete in anaerobic respiration.
9
Q
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plant and yeast cells?
A
- glucose –> Carbon dioxide + ethanol
10
Q
What is anaerobic respiration in yeast cells known as?
A
- Fermentation
11
Q
Why does fermentation have economic importance?
A
- It is used in the manufacture of bread and alcoholic drinks.
