Lesson 3: Metabolism Flashcards
1
Q
What is the definition of metabolism?
A
- Metabolism is the sum of all the reactions in a cell or the body.
2
Q
How is the energy released from respiration used in chemical reactions?
A
- The energy is used by the organism for the continual enzyme- controlled process of metabolism that synthesize new molecules.
3
Q
Give 5 examples of metabolism.
A
- respiration
- Conversion of glucose to starch, glycogen and cellulose.
- Formation of lipid molecule from a molecule of glycerol and 3 molecules of fatty acids.
- the use of glucose and nitrate ions to form amino acids which in turn are used to synthesise proteins
- Breakdown of excess proteins to form urea for excretion (by the kidneys.)
4
Q
Where are lipids found?
A
- In the cell membrane.
