Controls dangerous or otherwise harmful drugs, which are designated as controlled drugs (CD)

What does Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001?
Provides exceptions to restrictions of MDA so CDs can be used in medicine

1-5
1= most controlled
What are the different classes?
Class A,B,C
A = highest penalty

When can Sch 1 be taken in?
Purpose of destruction

Opiates
License needed
Pharmacist may supply BUT need required prescription from appropriate practitioner
What does safe custody apply to?
Stored in drug cabinet
All CD 1 + 2 except quinalbarbitone

What happens when drugs out of cabinet?
Must be under supervision of pharmacist

Invoice kept for 2 years
What are the requirements of CD prescription?
Name, form, strength
Dose, frequency, duration
Total quantity
Name, address of person being issued drug
Signature of prescriber
Date
Name + address of prescriber
Can Sch 2 + 3 still be supplied if minor typo or spelling mistake?
YES
What must be included on prescription?
Total quantity or number of dosage units in either words or figures
What happens if only words and NOT figure?
Can be prescribed
Describe collection by messenger
Produces supplier statement in writing given consent by recipient
Genuine + retain for 2 years
What left of prescription should Sch 2,3 + 4 exceed?
30 days
Describe requisitions for CDs
eg. pharmacist might need some for research
Doctor may need some for medicine bag
What must the requisition contain?
Signed by recipient
Recipients name + address
Recipients’ profession
Total quantity of CD
Purpose it’s required
