Synthetic prostaglandin
Actions:
- Enhance uterine contractions

Metabolism
A
- Converted to active metabolite misoprostol acid in the blood
- metabolised in the tissues and excreted by the kidneys

Indications
A
PPH (Primary postpartum haemorrhage)

Contras
A
- Allergy to prostaglandins
- Exclude multiple pregnancy before drug administration

A
History of asthma

Side effects
A
- Hyperpyrexia
- Shivering
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhoea

Special notes
A
Side effects are more likely with > 600 mcg oral dose
